Tetsuya Nomura

Tetsuya Nomura is a Japanese video game director and character designer for Square Enix. He was born on October 8th 1970 in Kōchi and graduated from vocational school with a degree in graphic design. In the early 1990's Square Enix (just Square at the time) hired him as a debugger for Final Fantasy IV, then as a monster designer for Final Fantasy V and then as a graphic director and minor character designer for Final Fantasy VI. Finally in 1995 he was asked to be the character designer to replace Yoshitaka Amano.

Nomura says that he is heavily influenced by the previous character designer and also by motion pictures, music videos, and magazines, especially fashion magazines which probably explains his complicated contemporary clothing designs. Nomura doesn't just design characters though, he likes to get really involved with his projects and helps with designing monsters, cut scenes, plot points and summoning sequences. His visual work (like cut scenes and especially the animated film he directed)contains a lot of camera techniques taken from music video's, as he really loves the unique way some of them are shot.
